Free screening and film discussion of 180° SOUTH

propshopchicago (map)

Selected By: Vadim

180° SOUTH is a movie inspired by two of the most unique and prolific environmentalists of our time - Yvon Chouinard and Doug Tompkins. These two men were the founders of the companies North Face and Patagonia. The movie's subject Jeff Johnson weaves Chouinard's and Tompkins's tale through his own modern day expedition. This expedition was inspired by the legendary trip taken by Chouinard and Tompkins back in 1968 that changed these two men's lives and inspired their life's work leading to saving the land trust of Patagonia . Along the way Jeff gets to meet and share time with his long time heroes and his mentors for this trip. The movie teaches and displays the transition that one can make from pure innocence and love for wild adventure to deep wisdom and connectedness to the wild world from which we are all deeply rooted. It is an important film and message for anyone who loves and respects the natural world and cares to protect and preserve it.

Here's a trailer to the movie:

There are now 7 people waiting for a spot to join us at this screening, and for those who haven't realized it this event will overlap with the start of the Superbowl. If you are not going to be attending then please take your name off of the RSVP list so one of the waiting list members can assume your spot.
I can't wait to see everyone and share this film!

I just talked with the venue host and they will be OK if people on the Waiting list will come too as long as they are Ok standing if all 60 seats will be taken. I doubt that it will happen as I expect to have some people who are "no shows". In any case all people on the Waiting list are welcome to come for this event. All seats will be on "first come - first serve" basis.

Thanks to Mike Murphy and Vadim for a very worthwhile event.
The movie was great and the post-film discussion was interesting.
Also, I don't know if this was intentional but, the room was so cold it felt like we were with the expedition climbing up the icy mountain.
If the goal was to connect with nature and the feeling of being outdoors in the winter, the meetup mission was accomplished.

Thanks to Mike for sharing this great movie w/ everyone!I enjoyed the movie and the discussion. However, I would have to agree with Jeffrey, we could feel an Arctic chill; I felt I should have slipped some heat warmers in my boots and gloves beforehand and kept moving my fingers in my gloves during discussion to increase the circulation...next time, w/ this location in winter, ill bring coffee and wear more layers.

The mention of Yvon and Doug's trip in a van to South America reminded me of a book by Tim Cahill about a road trip from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska. Entertaining read: http://www.amazon.com/Road-Fever-Tim-Cahill/dp/0394758374

I really enjoyed the company and event. Thank you all for sharing what came to be a very fast 2 1/2 hours and also for the wonderful and pertinent discussions which followed the film. I felt like we could have certainly continued the discussion further and I would love to pick up on some of the key concepts discussed at our next event. Thank you all, and I hope to see you out at a nature walk soon! Cheers! :) Mike

Thank you for sharing this film with us Mike, it was a great choice. Your wife's treats were Mmm-phenomenal, please thank her :).

Mike did a great job with the movie, the discussion and location. And his wife is a very kind person with cooking talent. Thank-you Mike's wife. Great turn-out on Super Bowl Sunday. The stars of the movie explained being a conservationist means taking action in our lives for the love of Nature. I agree with one of them saying being a minimalist is a good start. Thank-you for your efforts, Virgil

Nice group of people and a great film. I'm inspired to keep a check on my consumerism habits. Thanks for choosing the film.
